“I have said this many times but it's worth repeating: Daniel Barraud is without question one of the finest growers in all of the Mâconnais and there is a credible argument to be made that his remarkable consistency vaults him right to the very top of the list. Yes, there are other fine growers who sometimes make wines equal to those of Barraud but this man almost never misses. And as the scores and reviews suggest, both his 2007s and 2008s deserve to be in your cellars.”—Burghound
What wonderful things can we say about winemaker Daniel Barraud that his wines don't already say for us?
Like the quote above confirms, if you are looking for the finest in Vergisson (if not in the greater world of white Burgundy) chez Barraud is the place you'll find it. The 2008 vintage at this micro-production, organic estate couldn't be more pleasurable—we've taken to calling it white Burgundy with the works and a cherry on top, as just you think what's in the glass couldn't get any better, it up and does.
There's a little bit more baby fat to 2008 that gives the wines a wonderful mouthfeel, yet the wines don't drink at all heavily, thanks to the vintage's balanced acidity. There's also a very present, peppery edge to the vintage, a mineral kick and energy that is immediately noticeable in the wines' aromatics as well as in each savory and lively finish. “Overall, I think 2008 produced the kinds of wines that everyone will like, purist and novice alike,” said Daniel Barraud to Allan Meadows of Burghound. Regardless of which camp you consider yourself in, there's certainly a lot here to please.
