2010 Jean-Luc Dubois Burgundy
There are few Burgundy lineups as moving, as ruggedly attractive and as pleasing as our selections from winemaker Jean-Luc Dubois. The 2010 vintage here couldn’t be more complete—flavors are ripe and well-defined, acid is balanced and aromas wonderfully expressive and pure.
We visited Jean-Luc’s cellars this past summer and even though we’ve known this independent winemaker for ages now, it always strikes us how much magic one can fit into a tiny cellar under a house. Jean-Luc is as “old-school” as it gets, with a great selection of perfect older barrels and a philosophy of hands-off winemaking (letting the wine do the work and the talking) that means what’s in each bottle is exactly what Jean-Luc tasted off the vine in the fields.
For us, it doesn’t get more natural and pure than that. In 2010 Jean-Luc’s excellent vineyards are in full voice, delivering spice, energetic flavors and serious length—these bottles are always our top selections both for terroir expression and Burgundy value.

Dubois Chorey-les-Beaune Clos Margot 2010

"Clos Margot" is always one of our favorite selections from Dubois, and conveniently enough it is also always a stunning deal for Burgundian Pinot Noir. Pure red berries mix with cinnamon and licorice on the lively nose. The mouth is juicy and well balanced, with a good mix of cherry and pomegranate fruit underlined with some earthy notes and spice.

Dubois Ladoix La Combe Cuvee Unique 2010

Red and black cherries explode on the nose, with good mineral notes and suggestions of warm earth. Lacy and pure, with more cherries and black raspberries on the mouth; the vintage comes through loud and clear here with a wonderful fresh, almost crunchy, sensation of fresh summer fruits and spices.

This peerless village vineyard delivers a broader, juicier Pinot with plenty of stony definition in its aroma. Some of Jean-Luc’s oldest vines—many over 75 years old—make up the soul of this vineyard. Dubois Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes 2010

"Bressandes" is always a more concentrated premier cru, with the vineyard’s chalky brown and sandy soils giving the wine a richly textured feel on the palate. Salty-sweet notes of plum sauce and bright cherries show on the nose. Flavors are complex and juicy, with layers of red plums, red berries and licorice.
