ORGANIC WINERY
Castello Poggiarello, a small family farm and winery nestled in the foothills of the Montagnola, just west of Siena, both recalls the ancient nobility of Tuscany and its modern winemaking soul. Castello Poggiarello wines are certified organic and completely
hand-raised in micro-quantities.
The vineyards feed from a unique, iron-rich, brick-red earth—soil so unusual that it's not found anywhere else around Siena. The estate's 100% organic vines produce just a pound of fruit per plant. Sovicile's microclimate, with its nearby forests and early morning fogs, is in general cooler than the surrounding region, pushing harvest a good two to three weeks later than the neighbors. In addition to the estate's 15+ acres of vineyards, the family maintains
horse pastures, olive orchards, vegetable gardens and flower beds.
Poggiarello's "Collerosso" is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot, aged for 16 months in one-wine French oak barrels. The name is inspired by the red, iron-rich soils of the estate. The "Montechiaro" is 100% Cabernet Franc, aged for 18 months in one-wine French oak barrels. This "clear mountain" vineyard is high in mineral content (the same stones in the vineyard were those used to build Poggiarello's castle fortifications), making for a more structured, complex wine. The "Montebruno" is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. This "dark mountain" vineyard was also very rocky; its terraced rows were built with the same rocks into the hillside.
