This is sheer class from start to finish. Initially shy perfumes slowly blossom into aromas of fresh cherry juice, red roses and cranberries, blended with blond tobacco. A toothsome middle is juicy and richly layered with classic, earthy notes of spice and iron; the finish is a whirling eddy of rich baking spices and dried cherry fruit. The balance and poise of this classic Chianti makes it indispensible at the table. A native blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Canaiolo, aged in a blend of small and large older casks.

It’s the kind of call I love to get. A long-time customer just before the Fourth of July weekend rang up to say that he had just finished his last bottle of 1997 Castello della Paneretta “Torre a Destra,” from a case he bought from us back when the wine was released. We chatted for almost half an hour about what a joy it had been to follow the evolution of this great wine over the years.
