Another beautiful Côtes du Rhône and a steal of a deal for its very high quality -- seldom will you find a Côtes du Rhône with such a high percentage of Syrah as this one. For us it's a spicy, delicious cross-section of the northern and southern Rhone, in one perfect bottle. Peppery cherry notes mix with plums and bitter chocolate on the nose. A mouthful of ripe, concentrated black fruits, lined with licorice and mocca notes, is gorgeously saturated and very delicious. A blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache; aged in demi-muid and foudre.

It is seldom that you can find a bottle of Cotes du Rhone with the depth and complexity of a single-vineyard cru wine, but our man Thierry Sabon has always preferred to do things his own way. His two Cotes du Rhone selections, "Varene" and "Serre de Catin," break the mold of the simple red blend and offer a completely different take on both terroir expression and varietal purity in the south. The abundant fruit and spice of 2009 is more than an enticement to explore these two dynamic wines crafted by one of the region's great estates, and without question are two of the more cellar-worthy Cotes du Rhone bottles we've tasted for the vintage.
