Winemaker: Marc Cugney

Perhaps it’s the draw of centuries of tradition, perhaps the magnetic pull of fickle Pinot Noir, but Burgundy natives always find their way back to the Côte d’Or. Such was the case for Brigitte Berthelemot, a passionate wine lover who for all her life dreamed of owning an estate, someday, among the vineyards of her childhood.

Fate and luck sometimes do conspire, and Berthelemot was able to fulfill her dream through the acquisition of some of Burgundy’s finest old-vine terroirs. The retirement of two great winemakers, Yves Darviot (of Beaune) and Jean Garaudet (a long-standing NBI partner), allowed the winemaking torch to be passed from one generation to another. Berthelemot purchased their vineyards, and following the construction of a state-of-the-art winery in Meursault, is now continuing their great work.

Marc Cugney, a winemaker with decades of experience in Beaune and New Zealand (and happens to be Jean Garaudet’s nephew) is the estate winemaker; his facility with both reds and whites is outstanding, and with just two vintages it is already evident that quality here is unparalleled. The work in the fields (still guided by Jean Garaudet, who is generous with both his time and energy) is top-notch—the harvest, with multiple passes in the fields and serious triage in the cellar, is all performed by hand. Berthelemot told us that “every year, regardless of the weather, we bring in grapes of the highest quality.” It is evident that this diligent, respectful estate will not only echo the greatness of its predecessors, but take winemaking to a whole new level.

The estate Monthelie Rouge is surrounded by premier cru vineyards; the lieu-dit is “Pierrefite,” which sits next to Volnay 1er “Clos de Chenes.”  The estate Pommard “Noizons” sits directly next to premier cru vineyard “Charmots,” in the iron “heart” of Pommard terroir. These older vines, some 75 years or older, deliver Pinot Noir with a touch of licorice (similar to Gevrey.)

Berthelemot Beaune 1er Cru Belissand 2009
Berthelemot Beaune 1er Cru Belissand 2009
France / Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
Richly endowed and generous, "Belissand" slathers the palate with rich cherries and dried strawberries in cinnamon spice. Aromas remind of more cherries and a delicate hint of spring flowers. Flavors are broad and persistent, with a mix of black and red fruits and plenty of baking spices that flow into a lengthy finish. A wine we'll certainly enjoy for its upfront fruit and juiciness today (because it is so irresistible), but a mid-term cellar snooze is also in order.

Berthelemot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge 2009
Berthelemot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge 2009
France / Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
Called "the most satisfying" of the Beaune premier crus, "Clos des Mouches" may too be this walled city's most famous and complex. Brigitte blends grapes from the top of the slope and the bottom for a velvety, complex and lushly endowed Burgundian Pinot Noir with great staying power. Aromas remind of blackberries, violets and lightly toasted tobacco; the mouth is full and silky, with impressive freshness and lift, suggesting ripe cherries and more blackberries with real vibrancy and thrust. A gorgeous wine!

Berthelemot Beaune 1er Cru Greves 2009
Berthelemot Beaune 1er Cru Greves 2009
France / Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
"Greves" is one of Beaune's oldest vineyards (traces of Roman settlements have been found on the plot) and possibly one of its more complex. The vineyard's sandy soils inspire a kaleidoscope of classic Pinot Noir aroma as well as a depth and wonderful finesse in its flavors. Raspberries and violets mix with hints of bitter orange and plum skin on the expressive nose; sweet, lacy and elegant on the palate, with more red/black berry flavors, a bit of licorice and forest floor suggestions.

Berthelemot Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune 2009
Berthelemot Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune 2009
France / Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
Supple and spicy with oodles and oodles of juice, this perfect specimen of a Hautes-Côtes makes us wonder what other secrets are hidden in the hills above the Côte de Beaune. A blend of two separate plots (one with very old vines), the wine captures the essence and soul of Burgundian Pinot Noir in both its aromas and flavor. Violets and baking spices and a hint of forest floor on the nose; the mouth is awash with red cherries and blackberries.
