A sensational bottling from one of the Loire’s top organic/biodynamic estates; “Les Romains” every vintage is the sine qua non of Sauvignon Blanc and in 2008 this great family estate pulled out all the stops. Lush, juicy aromas of sautéed pears and honeysuckle blossoms saturate the nose. There’s more structure and more flesh than is usual here, with a tremendous, sea-salty edge that is undeniably mouth-watering. Quince rind, yellow roses and a dash of white pepper; the volume in the mouth reminds of whipped cream and poached white fruits. The region’s 100% flint soils shine through here, with suggestions of oyster shells and chalk giving the wine great definition and lift. Very fine.

There are very few bottles from the Loire that match the nobility and sheer concentration of “Les Romains.” This limited-release Sancerre, pulled from pure flint soils and raised biodynamically, easily mirrors the quality and longevity of grand cru white Burgundy. Just consider its vineyard—“Les Romains” is 100% silex, or flint. Few other vineyards in Sancerre can make such a claim; when you walk through these tightly packed rows the din is deafening, as the crunching underfoot sounds like so many oyster shells. This mineral mainline is what gives “Romains” its edge and zest.

One of the finest and most complex Sauvignon Blanc wines we’ve tasted in a while, and the great tragedy is there just so little of it. Chalk dust, white pepper, pear skins and poached fruits mix on the angular and fresh nose. Calling any wine “perfect” is bold but this one fits the bill. Very limited!
