One of the finest wines of the southern Rhône, hands-down—a great wine for the cellar with its concentrated yet elegant core of black fruits, rich spice and integrated tannins. Made in miniscule quantities every year from some of the family’s most rocky, high-altitude vineyards in Gigondas.

“The luxury cuvee, the 2009 Gigondas La Font du Tonin (coincidentally, I recently had the 1998, which, while fully mature, is drinking beautifully and is capable of lasting another 5-6 years) is a blend of 92% Grenache and 8% Mourvèdre aged 13 months in 1- to 2-year-old small barrels. It is a sexy, opulent, voluptuously-textured effort, which is not something you can often say about the cool climate wines of Gigondas. Its plum/purple color is followed by aromas of sautéed mushrooms, jus de viande, bouquet garni, blueberries and black raspberries. Full-bodied and opulently styled with soft tannins, it can be enjoyed over the next decade.”—The Wine Advocate

"Bright purple. Complex bouquet of dark berry compote, cherry-cola, licorice and spicecake, along with a subtle minerality. Juicy, palate-staining blackberry and cherry flavors nicely combine density and energy, with a vibrant mineral spine providing support. The fresh, focused finish repeats the spice and cola notes."--Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
2009 Domaine la Bouissiere Gigondas "Font de Tonin"
10.20.2011
One of the most impressive and certainly most powerful wines of the 2009 vintage in the southern Rhone is the impeccable Gigondas “Font de Tonin” from Domaine la Bouissiere. As the estate’s top cuvee, “Tonin” hails from the appellation’s highest altitude vineyard and as such is a valuable lesson in the touch of terroir to tame a richly endowed vintage into one both elegant and seductive.

“Tonin” is a wine that belongs in a cool cellar, as it ages in step with the best and will continue to evolve for years to come. We’ve opened bottles with five, 10 to even 15 years of cellar age and to a one we’ve been floored by the youth, the spice and the complexity of this wine. For us it is one of the top bottles of the southern Rhone! continue reading >>

Always a favorite; in 2008 the estate’s “straight” Gigondas got a bit of a boost with the inclusion of declassed fruit from their top cuvee, “Font de Tonin.” A rich, savory and almost meaty blend of very old-vine Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, aged in older barrel and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
