A very elegant and silky Cotes du Rhône that is as rare as a cold summer in the south—2010 was a very stingy vintage yet what it gave is incredibly pure, fresh and very balanced. This Grenache blend (90% Grenache, 5% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre) reminds us more in style and texture of a Cote de Nuits Burgundy; the nose is spiced, a blend of Nuits licorice and earth with southern garrigue. Plentiful and ripe black and red berries on the mouth, great lift and velvety tannins all make for a very supple, velvety and balanced red.

One of our favorite, yet very limited, Côtes du Rhône. This beautiful homage to ancient Grenache in 2009 is richly concentrated, almost chewy, with ample spice and black-fruited power on the palate. An exuberant nose of raspberry liqueur, dried garrigue and licorice pastilles fills the glass; the mouth is long and ripe and creamy, with notes of chocolate, cherry skins and boysenberry puree. An unforgettable blend of 90% very-old-vine Grenache, 5% Syrah and 5% Cinsault; 100% tank-made.

A very fine wine and one that will dazzle with its concentration and elegant aromatic profile; winemaker Michel Arnaud tends some of the finest older vines in the shadow of Mont Redon-Cabrières. This is the home of Châteauneuf's best soils—settled amid round stones the size of fists, well-draining sand and mineral-rich limestone, his very old vine (100+ years!) Grenache couldn't be happier.
