"Dureuil’s 2008 Rully 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes – assembled from two (like virtually all Rully crus, little-known) sites – features beet root, blackberry and dark cherry mingled with beef bouillon and laced with iodine, chalk, and cherry pits. More substantial and palate-staining than the other Rullys in this year’s collection, it certainly makes a case for the superiority of these sites, given that the vines in both are young. There is welcome cut and concentration but also a sense of fine-grained tannic grip and meatiness in both senses of that word.
