This wine is Egly's treasure; with more than SIX YEARS on its lees, “V.P.” (in French, “extended aging”) is a testament both to the greatness of his terroir and to his vision as an uncompromising Champagne artist. A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, pulled from older vines in the three finest villages in the Montaigne de Reims—Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay. The secret of “V.P.” is its harmony—with such a long time on its nourishing lees, the wine is complex, pure and smooth, in the mold of a fine white Burgundy. Pale gold in the glass; honeysuckle, white roses and a tease of marshmallow sweetness, tinged with verbena, on the nose. The mouth is energetic and spicy, seductively ripe, with flavors of Mirabelle plum, blood peaches, white pepper and red jelly. Incredibly long, fresh and lively.
