2009 Fred Magnien red Burgundy
2.25.2011
This special, pre-arrival offer of 2009 Burgundy represents some of the
top vineyards of the Côte de Nuits, land that Fred literally grew up on
and today stewards with some of the region’s finest growers.
Organically
cultivated and always hand-raised and harvested, Frederic Magnien wines
are made in small quantities and with serious care. He’s the only
winemaker we know (that’s not of retirement age!) in Burgundy who knows
each hill and valley like the back of his hand—and this know-how
translates directly to wines that are honest and terroir-true, a
delectable (and oh-so drinkable) walking tour of centuries of tradition
distilled into one perfect bottle.
Make no bones about it: 2009 is delicious Burgundy. The supple texture
of the wines we’ve tasted again and again is undeniable and
irresistible. There’s an almost creamy sensation to the ripe fruit
you’ll find in each bottle—this is Burgundy with serious finesse and
Pinot fruit that is both precise and succulent at once.
Stephen Tanzer concurs. "The best [wines] are wonderfully silky, scented
pinots, fully ripe but not roasted, with a rare level of fleshiness and
compelling sweetness of fruit. I love their surprisingly fresh red
fruit character. They will likely be delicious on release, but they also
appear to possess the stuffing and phenolic ripeness for at least
mid-term aging. The greatest among them have the concentration of
phenolic material and balance to surprise with their longevity."
