In the heart of Morey-St.-Denis, the vineyard “Clos Baulet” has to be one of Morey’s more sultry offerings. Aromas of poached dark cherries and dried roses on the nose; the mouth is silky and sexy, with the concentration of older-vine Pinot in flavors of black cherry marmalade, baked earth and pepper. Bountiful and very delicious; almost too easy to drink.
2009 Fred Magnien red Burgundy
2.25.2011
This special, pre-arrival offer of 2009 Burgundy represents some of the
top vineyards of the Côte de Nuits, land that Fred literally grew up on
and today stewards with some of the region’s finest growers.
Organically
cultivated and always hand-raised and harvested, Frederic Magnien wines
are made in small quantities and with serious care. He’s the only
winemaker we know (that’s not of retirement age!) in Burgundy who knows
each hill and valley like the back of his hand—and this know-how
translates directly to wines that are honest and terroir-true, a
delectable (and oh-so drinkable) walking tour of centuries of tradition
distilled into one perfect bottle.
Make no bones about it: 2009 is delicious Burgundy. The supple texture
of the wines we’ve tasted again and again is undeniable and
irresistible. There’s an almost creamy sensation to the ripe fruit
you’ll find in each bottle—this is Burgundy with serious finesse and
Pinot fruit that is both precise and succulent at once.
Stephen Tanzer concurs. "The best [wines] are wonderfully silky, scented
pinots, fully ripe but not roasted, with a rare level of fleshiness and
compelling sweetness of fruit. I love their surprisingly fresh red
fruit character. They will likely be delicious on release, but they also
appear to possess the stuffing and phenolic ripeness for at least
mid-term aging. The greatest among them have the concentration of
phenolic material and balance to surprise with their longevity."

Frédéric Magnien Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2010
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
LIMITED. Extraordinary potential. A spiral-bound nose of alternating baking spices, minerals and licorice hovers over a richly endowed and supple mouth of black and red cherries in liquor. Pure silk. “A spicy, ripe and solidly complex nose of red berry fruit liqueur, plum and black cherry notes complements the supple, generous and concentrated medium-bodied flavors… the class and refinement of a grand cru.”—Burghound

Frédéric Magnien Chambertin-Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2010
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
LIMITED. Effortlessly beautiful and radiant, with a rich core of pure red/purple fruit. The wine’s texture and aroma all speaks to a ruddy glow of rich fruit and pure flavors, a Pinot Noir autumn sunset. “This is impressively refined with excellent breadth to the pure and elegant aromas that display a lovely range of spice elements along with a cool mélange of red and dark berry fruit and stone notes. The rich, supple and mouth-coating big-bodied flavors possess very good phenolic maturity as the firm tannins are pushed to the background…”—Burghound

Frédéric Magnien Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Borniques 2010
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
Another favorite and one in which Fred decided to add considerably less sulfur than usual—the resulting natural texture and velvety mouthfeel is overwhelmingly seductive. Pure red berry fruit and lots of power; Burgundian Pinot Noir doesn’t get more natural or pure than this. “The exceptionally fresh and energetic medium-bodied flavors are mineral-inflected and quite pure…This is lovely and actually very good…”—Burghound

Frédéric Magnien Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes 2010
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
A sultry, saturated premier cru with darker fruits on the nose but a gorgeous mouthful of summer-ripe red berries and spice on the mouth. The classic Chambolle elegance and aroma is here in spades, with an added dose of spice and pure fruit on the finish. “This is more elegant still with really lovely aromas of rose petals and red currant that give way seamlessly to the lilting, pure and intense middle weight flavors that culminate in a linear and impressively persistent finish. Strongly recommended.”—Burghound

Frédéric Magnien Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2010
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
A lacy floral nose opens to a delicate and precise mouth of purple and red fruits. Fred’s selection of older vines here gives more profound, complex flavors than one would expect from a village wine. “A restrained but highly complex nose exhibits notes of wild red berries, cassis, plum and lovely floral hints…This is quite lacy and very Chambolle in character.”—Burghound

Côte de Nuits-Burgundy

Frédéric Magnien Echezeaux Grand Cru 2010
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
