Hautes-Cotes wines are always special—these vineyards that sit above the tree line in the Cote de Nuits deliver more chiseled, precise fruit given their cooler temperatures at altitude. Yet while most winemakers treat their Hautes-Cotes as a simple wine, Gavignet gives his the royal treatment—his are older vines (50+ years) with juice aged in barrels previously used for his premier crus. This is always a stunning wine, and one of the top values in Pinot Noir anywhere. The nose is a fruit festival, with plums and raspberries dusted with cinnamon. Superbly ripe and round, with grippy tannins and lots of spice—not to mention that creamy edge that makes 2009 so immediately delectable. A top pick.

2009 Philippe Gavignet red Burgundy
10.4.2010
These wines combine all the earthy, exotically spicy power of Nuits with
an added layer of class and silk—Nuits done up in a suit and
tails?—putting them not only in the camp of some of the finest we’ve
tasted from Philippe, but also certainly some of the more savory and
complex wines we’ve tasted in this corner of the Cote de Nuits. In a way this is also a year where everything that could come together
for Philippe did—most of his vineyards are in the prime of their life,
older vines that deliver lush, small berries without a blemish (a
winemaker’s dream). The weather was flawless; the harvest was cool and
rain-free; and as we’ve visited his cellars over the past six months
it’s been a pure joy to taste each cru and watch as it blooms from
achingly beautiful to blockbuster.

Gavignet Bourgogne Chardonnay 2010
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
Fresh and pure Burgundian Chardonnay with mouth-watering cut and balance. Sourced from vineyards in the broader Hautes Cotes appellation (above the village of Nuits-St.-Georges) with a touch of declassified fruit from the estate's very fine "Argillats" village vineyard. Aged in used barrel and tank; very, very rare!

Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
A balanced, black-fruited nose with a touch of forest floor reveals a palate-staining mouth of black and red fruits and plenty of black pepper. Aged in older barrique; a delicious basic Burgundian Pinot Noir with depth and purity.

Gavignet Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru Chaboeufs 2010
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
Cherry aromas are sweet and lush, literally pouring from the glass. The mouth mixes more smoky, meaty black cherry fruit with suggestions of iron and a mineral edge. Rounder and certainly very supple, but the vineyard’s mineral soils gives all this stuffing incredible definition and poise.

Gavignet Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru Pruliers 2010
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
Sweet, sexy—simply outstanding. “Pruliers” is always a more structured, deeper and darker cru, one we like to sock away and watch evolve with a couple of years in the cellar...a very noble, concentrated and structured cuvee that will give great pleasure for years to come.

Gavignet Bourgogne Rouge 2009
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
Sweet, sexy and perfectly proportioned—a uncomplicated yet deliciously complex draught of Pinot Noir purity (and a great deal to boot). Winemaker Philippe Gavignet harvested spicy fruit from mostly older vines from two Bourgogne vineyards in the village of Nuits-St.-Georges, “Maladieres” and “Croix Blanche.”
