Winemaker Jean Calot tends only older vines—80 to 110 years old—on some of Morgon’s finest terroirs, frightfully steep granite hillsides, perfectly exposed south to all the sun’s glory. This 2009 cru wine is top to bottom sensational, with tremendous spice and structure. Aromas run the gamut from warm lavender to cloves to sweet peppers and cherries; the mouth takes it up a notch with cherries jubilee, mulling spice and a magic shake of chocolate dust.  From the moment we hit the ground in Beaujolais we knew this was the big one. Sure, we’ve visited these caves for decades; we’ve tasted some extraordinary wines. But these wines were different.
