This exceptional plot of old vines (45 to 60 years old) called “Préau,” in Brochon, is for all purposes identical in exposition and soils as neighboring Gevrey village vineyards. This is a site that in the hands of the family Livera consistently outperforms most Gevrey village wines—if not premier cru bottlings. We selected eight barrels aged in mostly older wood (with just one new barrel in the bunch.) A brooding purple in the glass, the wine opens with tantalizing aromas of black raspberries, fresh ginger and the caramelized scent of baked pie crust. Spicy and deep, with miles of luscious, chewy dark fruit that shows balanced and juicy. Not only is this a spectacular value for villages Burgundy, but also shows far above its station, and should age effortlessly for five to 10 years. A favorite.

Livera Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Villages 2009
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
A noble vineyard in the heart of Gevrey, “Clos Village” sits just outside the estate, where both Philippe and Damien Livera can keep a watchful eye on their 60-year-old vines. It's really a baby Chambertin, with its gorgeous floral nose and saturated, royal purple core of ripe yet balanced fruit. Good spice and stony concentration on the nose; peppery and creamy black cherries on the mouth.
