Macarico is the name of one of the mountain’s most prominent lava flows, a stream of iron- and mineral-rich soils from which Aglianico draws its concentration, its spice and its flavorful saturation. Aged in a mix of new and older French oak for 14 months.
“…richer, darker and deeper than the Macari. It, too, shows impressive concentration…Sweet balsamic notes develop on the mid-palate and finish, adding complexity and dimension. This is a decidedly fruit-driven style of Aglianico…”—The Wine Advocate

Macarico Aglianico del Vulture Macari 2006
Italy
/
Basilicata
This gorgeous Aglianico has it all: rich fruit, a fleshy body plus good balance, not too bold to bludgeon but certainly not shy, either. Aromas remind of black cherries, licorice and a mineral tang of iron and ash (yes, this is the volcano talking loud and clear!). The mouth is saturated and pure, richly juicy with blackberry, licorice, stewed plums and black cherries.
