Winemaker Corinna Kruse’s 2008 Beaumes outperformed in grace and elegance many a Châteauneuf for the vintage—what she has succeeded in achieving in 2009 is just as glorious with even more ripeness and heft. Kruse’s vineyards sit on a unique vein of “Trias” soils, brick-red and iron-rich, which gives the wine serious definition and poise. A blend of 55% Grenache and 45% Syrah, vinified completely in cement tank; unfined and unfiltered. The nose is heady and rich, with black pepper and plum skins, a hint of meat char and lots of black fruit aromas. Well-balanced yet very supple and plush; flavors suggest blackberries and olallieberries, lots of baking spices and a hint of iron tang on the finish. This is a big wine with a solid profile, and one that deserves to be poured with the best of the southern Rhone.
