Aged one year in demi-john, then four years in barrel. The richness of Grenache raised on pure schist soils comes through in notes of dark chocolate, sea salt and boysenberry tart. Wonderfully fresh and lively, however, on the tongue—profound and layered flavors evolve slowly in the glass.

Mas Amiel’s fine vintage wines are made from 100% Grenache, farmed
biodynamically from very old vines which yield a miniscule amount of
fruit—some 25 hl/ha. The aging process at Mas Amiel is fascinating:
wines are first fortified, and then placed in large glass demi-johns
outdoors to age for a year. After this, the wines are transferred to oak
vats to age for five to 20 years.

The foothills of the Pyrenees, at the western border between Spain and France, are a rocky, windswept area that appears more suitable for mountain goats than people—or certainly, vines. Here "soils" are pitch black schist stones that crunch underfoot; the winds can blow up to 100 miles an hour. If you'd expect red wine from the region to be rich and powerful and a little wild, you'd be right. This great blend ("notre terre" means "our earth" in French) of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan grapes is concentrated and savory; a perfect pair for a barbecued steak.
