The foothills of the Pyrenees, at the western border between Spain and France, are a rocky, windswept area that appears more suitable for mountain goats than people—or certainly, vines. But a wacky gamble more than 200 years ago led by equally brave (or crazy) souls has made Mas Amiel today one of the more unique wineries in France, if not the world. Here "soils" are pitch black schist stones that crunch underfoot; the winds can blow up to 100 miles an hour. If you'd expect red wine from the region to be rich and powerful and a little wild, you'd be right. This great blend ("notre terre" means "our earth" in French) of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan grapes is concentrated and savory; a perfect pair for a barbecued steak.

Mas Amiel Maury Cuvee 6 Ans d'Age
France
/
Languedoc-Roussillon
The richness of Grenache raised on pure schist soils comes through in notes of dark chocolate, sea salt and boysenberry tart. Wonderfully fresh and lively, however, on the tongue—profound and layered flavors evolve slowly in the glass.

“Mas Amiel’s classic, non-vintage renditions of Maury keep getting better for the price...This elegant wine redolent of roasted chestnuts, toasted pralines, dried cherries, and cocoa powder is smooth and polished on the palate, retains a lovely, refreshing brightness..."

Mas Amiel Cotes de Roussillon Rosé Le Plaisir 2009
France
/
Languedoc-Roussillon
The name says it all. This “pleasure” rosé gets its serious spice and precision from the region's schist soils and howling winds that pour from the nearby Pyrenees. 100% Grenache Noir; this rosé delivers both wind-swept freshness along with good structure, which makes it indispensible with Mediterranean-inspired fare. (Tapas, anyone?)
