One of the more elegant and harmonious Clos Saint Denis wines we've ever had from the Magniens; this wine just bowled us over with its aromas and its very youthful yet silky flavors. Again, here good vineyard placement (higher upslope, southern exposure) shows what an edge terroir can give a savvy winemaker—more balance, more character, more oomph overall. "Captivating nose offers crushed cherry, rose petal, spices, smoke and vanilla. Lush, sweet and liqueur-like in the mouth, with good floral lift giving it a light touch. Really echoes with flowers and minerals. This very strong wine finishes long and subtle, with lovely mineral grip."—Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
2009 Domaine Michel Magnien Burgundy
7.25.2011
There are few pleasures we enjoy more than a well-aged bottle of Michel
Magnien Burgundy. Vintage after vintage the Magniens—father Michel
still in the fields, even though he's long earned his retirement, and
son Frederic in the cellar—have shown that five generations of
Burgundian talent and terroir know-how poured into a singular Burgundy
bottle can only result in some of the finest wines that this region can
give.
The 2009 vintage is no exception; our selections are both
complex and complete wines, wines that support winemaker Fred Magnien's
assertion to us that his goal for his dad's wines is Burgundy that
shows at its best with a few years of cellar age—that is, classic
Burgundy with balance and poise and grace.

Michel Magnien Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2009
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
A textbook example of Charmes as well as a tribute to the silky power of 2009. The family's ancient vines (many close to 100 years old) give birth to a Charmes with darker fruit and more brooding power; sultry, musky, intense aromas announce a very full mouth of spiced red fruits and black cherry flavors.

Michel Magnien Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2009
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
The family's precious few rows of vines in this grand cru sit further up slope, best positioned for both sun exposure yet moderated temperatures given the higher elevation. This means a Clos de la Roche of impeccable balance above all, stony power and lots of supple structure. A wine for the ages.

Michel Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cazetiers 2009
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
Captivating, electric, unforgettable—"Cazetiers" is a model of Burgundian Pinot Noir complexity and its terroir proves every vintage that there is always something exciting to discover here. High-altitude, older vines and lots of stony energy translates to a very spicy, delineated Pinot with great aromatics.

Michel Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Goulots 2009
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
"Goulots" starts off shy but unveils its secrets slowly and sensually—this high-altitude vineyard's rich clay terroir delivers a wine with good weight in the mouth and a creamy texture, accentuated by the already luscious character of the 2009 vintage. Still pin-point balance and chock-full of minerals, too.

Michel Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrees 2009
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
"…the essence of a red pinot fruit liqueur nuanced with subtle earth and smoke aromas that precede very round and mouth-coating middle weight flavors that brim with ample amounts of dry extract, all wrapped in a firm finish that mixes youthful austerity with a trace of natural sweetness. A high-quality villages that is worth considering."—Burghound

Michel Magnien Morey-St.-Denis 1er Cru Millandes 2009
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
We've had bottles of "Millandes" with no less than 20 years of bottle age and they're still raring to go—there's certainly something extraordinary about both the vineyard's fertile, brown soils and the proximity to noble Clos de la Roche that makes "Millandes" so magical. Unquestionably one of our favorite premier crus each year.

Michel Magnien Morey-St.-Denis Mont Luisant 2009
France
/
Côte de Nuits-Burgundy
A special villages vineyard that sits above grand cru Clos de la Roche, on a very steep slope, hence the "mont" in the name. This high-altitude perch delivers wonderfully complex and very aromatic Pinot with plenty of juicy power. Suggestions of violets, red roses and cassis on the nose; the medium-bodied mouth is energetically spicy, with juicy blackberry flavors and lots of minerality.
