Grace and agility—"Sentiers" every vintage shows itself as complex and certainly as cellar-worthy as its neighboring grand cru, Bonnes Mares. The clay from the vineyard contributes a silky, sultry mouthfeel to the wine; lots of candied violets, spice and velvety concentration.

Incredible purity and precision. "Fremières" sits in the eastern portion of Chambolle and is practically a rock quarry for all the stones that feed these older vines. A simply monumental wine in 2009 as the balance here is exceptional.

Michel Magnien Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2009

A textbook example of Charmes as well as a tribute to the silky power of 2009. The family's ancient vines (many close to 100 years old) give birth to a Charmes with darker fruit and more brooding power; sultry, musky, intense aromas announce a very full mouth of spiced red fruits and black cherry flavors.

The family's precious few rows of vines in this grand cru sit further up slope, best positioned for both sun exposure yet moderated temperatures given the higher elevation. This means a Clos de la Roche of impeccable balance above all, stony power and lots of supple structure. A wine for the ages.

One of the more elegant and harmonious Clos Saint Denis wines we've ever had from Magniens; this wine just bowled us over with its aromas and its very youthful yet silky flavors. Again, here good vineyard placement (higher upslope, southern exposure) shows what an edge terroir can give a savvy winemaker—more balance, more character, more oomph overall.

"Chaffots" is a bolder, bigger Morey cru, showing more earthy power and concentration that makes us think we're going to be very happy that we stashed a couple of these bottles in the cellar. Lush and structured, with lots of red/black fruits and licorice suggestions.

We've had bottles of "Millandes" with no less than 20 years of bottle age and they're still raring to go—there's certainly something extraordinary about both the vineyard's fertile, brown soils and the proximity to noble Clos de la Roche that makes "Millandes" so magical. Unquestionably one of our favorite premier crus each year.
