Winemaker(s): Gianpaolo and Cesare Vaona

On the sunny hillsides of Alta Valpolicella, just northwest of Verona, sits the historic estate of Novaia. This 15th century winery seamlessly combines the old and the new, creating wines from ancient native Italian varietals while celebrating these wines in its state-of-the-art tasting room and cantina.

High-altitude vineyards add a unique character to every wine produced at this estate. The Vaona family has been making wine in Valpolicella for generations. In 1908, the family won a grand prix medal in Verona for its wines; today, these high standards continue under the stewardship of Gianpaolo Vaona and his brother, Cesare. Novaia focuses its attentions on Amarone and Valpolicella, wines that are highly regarded in the Amarone della Valpolicella DOC.

A unique blend of native Veronese grapes—Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella (the same you'll find in Amarone wines). The medium-bodied mouth is zesty and bright, with summer-ripe yet vibrant red cherries and tart pie cherries, plenty of black pepper and a lively edge of citrus zest. Hints of cinnamon, more pepper and a bit of cherry skin show on the brisk finish.

Novaia Amarone della Valpolicella Corte Vaona 2006
Novaia Amarone della Valpolicella Corte Vaona 2006
Italy / Veneto
An abundantly spicy Amarone from one of the more legendary vintages in Italy; a riot of baking aromas and serious character set this decadent yet chiseled wine apart. Rich yet balanced flavors of cherry and cola, cassis and dried plums slather the palate. The finish is more spice and plenty of mineral energy. A stunning example of the greatness (and almost magical potential) of fine Amarone.

Very low yields and a slow maturation means a wine with impressive concentration and succulence—perfectly ripe red berries and cranberries are washed with what we imagine as crushed glacial ice; this is invigorating Alpine red wine!

Novaia Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso 2006
Novaia Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso 2006
Italy / Veneto
Grapes for this character-rich Ripasso are dried for months after the harvest then gently pressed for a wine that is vibrantly dry yet utterly, uncannily rich and complex on the tongue. It is autumn in a bottle, with the scents of truffles and chestnuts roasting in the oven...the 2006 vintage to boot is an extraordinary one in Italy, giving this already rich, sapid Ripasso another layer of concentration and intensity. Crushed cherries, red roses and black plums are endlessly juicy and pleasurable on the tongue.
