Ancient Romans with an eye on their wine amphorae knew a thing or two about Campania’s terroir, and thus called the region campania felix, or fortunate country. Bourbon kings, when they ruled the land, were wise to keep much of Campania's vinous harvest for their own private cellars.
Today Quintale continues the grand tradition of winemaking through single-varietal wines and blends that honor Italy’s unique, native grapes that truly thrive on Campania’s volcanic soils.
Quintale is found in the lesser-known town of Teverola, close to Aversa and northeast of Naples in southern Italy. The estate maintains some of the finest vineyards in Campania, nurturing native varietals such as Casavecchia, Pallagrello, Asprinio, Falanghina and Piedirosso on the black, mineral-rich soils created through thousands of years of volcanic eruptions—from Vesuvius to the south to Monte Procida, which still grumbles under the roots and soils of many of the estate’s vines and vineyards.
Our partnership with Quintale is ideal, in that winemakers allow us to peruse through their rich cellars to choose wines that express, for us, the ideal character of both the land and the spirit of southern Italy.
Varietals include: Aglianico, a ruddy, robust red grape that when grown on volcanic soils, can match Nebbiolo and Sangiovese in flavor and power; Asprinio, a delicate white grape with impressive acidity and freshness; Casavecchia, a red grape with good body and structure, similar to Aglianico; Greco di Tufo, a white grape redolent of almonds and peaches; Falanghina, a white grape grown on the volcanic terraces of Campi Flegrei, rich with almonds and wildflowers; Pallagrello Nero, a red grape with full-bodied, blue-fruited characteristics, combined with a Pinot Noir-like complexity.
