Winemaker: Giancarlo Rocca
Hand-crafted wines that are nurtured from field to barrel, traditional winemaking knowledge that has been passed on from generation to generation—this is what makes Ronchi Barbaresco so special.
Although we have worked with the Rocca family for at least a decade, these peerless wines are still an insider find. Our selections of Barbaresco, not to mention character-rich bottlings of Barbera and Dolcetto, effortlessly blend the beautiful traditions of Piedmont and the winemaking knowledge of generations of Piedmontese winemakers with the savvy and technology of today.
The “Ronchi” cru runs along the southern edge of the appellation, near the historic town of Barbaresco. Bordered by “Montestefano” to the north, where Nebbiolo shows a deep complexity and elegant tannins, and “Moccagatta” to the south, the source of silky Nebbiolo with delicate yet intense perfume, “Ronchi” combines the best of all these attributes in a wine that is layered and rich, jam-packed with fresh, pure berries. Winemaker Giancarlo Rocca and three generations of the Rocca clan live in a house built by the family surrounded by “Ronchi” vines—this perfect amphitheater not only captures the sun to push Nebbiolo to perfect ripeness, but also couldn’t be more picturesque.
Giancarlo invites us to his cellar every year to select what we feel are the finest lots of wine from all of his crus—Barbaresco, Barbera “Terle” and Dolcetto “Rosario.” These are vineyards that are tended by Giancarlo’s hands alone; that are harvested also by hand; and produce wonderfully ripe and expressive grapes that are vinified gently and naturally in a combination of tank and barrel.
