The Sarrazin brothers, Guy and Jean-Yves, knew they had something good in this 2008 Maranges. So did we. During a tasting last year leaving the cellar quickly was all we could do to keep ourselves from drinking the whole barrel empty. Perhaps it’s a miracle, but we’ll just call it Maranges. Aromas are very Gevrey, a vibrant combination of cinnamon, sweet licorice and a bit of incense. The mouth is a festival of spring and summer fruit, cherries and plums that effortlessly blend a bit of tart and sweet in every bite. An earthy, spicy edge plus a serious mineral profile wrap the wine with refined corset but honestly, it’s a noble red Burgundy that’s bursting at the seams—in a very good way.

What Maranges has going for it is three-fold in the terroir
department—vines in top form, perched at good altitude, planted on dark,
ruddy soils that are chock-full of interesting minerals and character.
And boy did this equation ever add up in 2008. Not to undermine our
other esteemed Côte d’Or partners, but this selection may be one of the
most vibrant, spicy and flavor-packed red Burgundies of the vintage—not
to mention one of the more excellent values for top-notch Burgundy, bar
none.
