The name of this winery says volumes about the fine wines made here in the wild Leyda Valley—Viña Litoral, or “wines of the coast.” The energy and the freshness of the sea are captured in every grape grown in Leyda, just six miles from the Pacific Ocean and found to the south of its more flashy neighbor, Casablanca Valley.
Viña Litoral is one of just a few pioneering estates in Leyda, a hilly region that offers plenty of challenges—and ample rewards—for winemakers. Water is scarce; soils are poor; hills are steep and often swathed in a layer of fog. Yet Leyda has quickly established itself as a center for premium wines with extraordinary character. This is artisan winemaking with a bit of Survivor spirit, winemakers braving the elements and wresting what they can from a terrain that is both beautiful and raw. In terms of sheer quality, if any region in Chile could be christened the Côte d’Or, Leyda is it.
The winery’s line of premium wines, called “Ventolera,” refers to the sudden, strong winds that whip up from the coast and drive fog inland.
