2010 Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Blanc "Guigne Chevres"
5.25.2012
The finest wines from Sancerre can (and do) age in step with the finest white Burgundy—and a well-aged Sancerre is a pleasure that no serious cellar should be without. This new single-vineyard Sancerre from Domaine Vacheron is a wine for which we wish we could speed up time. Steely and pure today, with a rich core of white fruit and chalky essence, “Guigne Chèvres” is completely organic/biodynamic and only a handful of cases were produced in 2010, a year of very low yields yet extraordinary wine. continue reading >>

Alpine inspiration -- Cool 2011 whites from Friuli
5.16.2012
Inspiration to poets and palates in northern Italy as far back as the 14th century and possibly even further, these native Friulian grapes share three crucial elements that make for great, refreshing and memorable white wine. Pin-point balance (a harmony of acid, fruit and mineral expression), refreshingly low alcohol and varietal honesty, which for us simply means that the most eloquent voice of these grapes is found in Friuli—and nowhere else. A great selection for summer! continue reading >>

Elegance has always been at the core of winemaking at Le Clos du Caillou, its peerless terroir producing rich red blends that offer concentrated, succulent flavor in each silky, harmonious mouthful. Yet elegance is also the buzzword of the 2010 vintage, a spectacular year for lovers of southern red blends with not only saturated fruit but energy and vibrancy in every sip. continue reading >>

2009 Clearwater Creek Chardonnay Mendocino
2.1.2012
clearwater creek mendocino chardonnayIn the depths of northern Mendocino County is a patchwork of some of the most breathtaking vineyards the golden state can claim, and it’s here where our latest—and possibly greatest—Chardonnay was born.

The Alder Springs Vineyard is one of the leading sources of fine grapes for northern California’s most hallowed names. Patz & Hall. Behrens & Hitchcock. Arnot Roberts. Copain. And now our very own label, Clearwater Creek, joins this impressive list of insiders who know great terroir when they see it—and how important it is that this quality translates into great wine in the bottle.

Our Chardonnay is medium-bodied, silky on the tongue and fruity, with just the right balance of vanilla and spice, a delicious and pure white that glows with the inner beauty of a spring sunset off the Mendocino coast, with sea spray in the air and the cooling influence of pine trees a tingle at your neck. Pure, juicy and refreshing, a perfect complement to Thai or Vietnamese cuisine. continue reading >>

2010 Courtault Chablis
1.29.2012
For us there is nothing more refreshing and stimulating than a chilled glass of Chablis, as when it is good, the beauty and precision of the region’s impeccable terroir can’t be beat.

The petite town of Ligornelles and the family domaine of Jean-Claude Courtault took us completely by surprise—and was exactly what we were looking for. His vision from the start was to craft Chablis that he loved to drink, Chablis for the family table and for everyday pleasure, wine that spoke of the vivacity and purity of the region.

At their core these are delicious, fresh and uncomplicated bottles of Chablis—perfect for casual lunches, aperitifs, and unforgettable with fresh seafood (fresh crab or oysters are ideal pairs). continue reading >>

The hottest spot for wine in Sicily today: Mt Etna
9.28.2011
We can’t get enough of the wines of Mt. Etna in Sicily. It is so seldom that you come across something truly, completely new, a wine that delivers flavors that are so varied and exciting yet so undeniably pure and honest that immediately recalibrates what you think you know about the world of wine.

We like these sort of gustatory wake-up-calls, and we think after you’ve tasted this Nerello Mascalese you’ll feel the same. The miniature family estate of Pietradolce has only been around a handful of years but already their “Archineri” has been awarded Italy’s highest wine honors.  A product of ancient vines grown on pure lava stone on the smoking slopes of volcanic Mt. Etna, “Archineri” is not only incredibly unique but also a full-bodied, plush and pleasing red that is tailor-made for the dinner table. continue reading >>

2010 Saint Pourçain Blanc
9.18.2011
What in the world is Tressallier? Possibly one of France’s oldest, rarest and most vibrant white wines, and one of her best-kept secrets, too. This bracing mineral white belongs on the table of those who love cut Loire whites and textbook Chablis (not to mention fresh seafood).

This is one bottle that will surprise, dazzle and perhaps confound even the more schooled wine lover, as Tressallier is ridiculously rare and cultivated only in the small region of Saint-Pourçain in rural south-central France. This 2010 is bone dry and vibrant, with a whiplash of citrus flavor on the palate and super-refreshing all around.   continue reading >>

A beautiful selection of crisp whites from Friuli in northern Italy
8.15.2011
If you consider yourself a connoisseur of fine whites (or are dead-tired of the same old Chardonnay) then our 2010 selections from Alberice in Friuli, northern Italy, are wines that will impress. When so much white wine has been homogenized to please some imaginary global palate, these Friulian grapes have fought tooth and nail to retain the intense perfume, the full flavors and the serious complexity that the glacial influence of the Alps plus ancient varietal tradition have endowed them with. continue reading >>

2006 Macarico Aglianico del Vulture Macarí
8.14.2011
You have to have the passion of a Barile local like winemaker Rino Botte, or perhaps be a bit mad (or think the surface of the moon is a homey place) to tough it out in the volcanic vineyards of Basilicata in southern Italy—or, like us, be so enamored of the potential of Aglianico on these pitch-black slopes that no challenge is too great to keep you away. Rino’s 2006 “Macari” is unapologetically robust and richly endowed, with good grip and loads of pep, a red wine with the bravado of southern Italy and just enough manners to invite over with relatives. continue reading >>
