Thursday, July 24, 2008 2006 Philippe Livera BurgundyHard work, serious rewardsDamien Livera is talking about hard work. Work so hard that he clenches both his fists and flexes his arms above a barrel of his father's Côtes de Nuits-Villages, to show us how much “muscle” he's put into this cru. His father, Philippe, nods quietly, comme d'habitude—but he's smiling as well.
Damien, since finishing his studies in Beaune, has taken a more active role in the domaine, starting with the family's exemplary older-vine vineyards. Here everything is always done by hand—pruning, tilling and harvesting—but now the hands are four instead of just two.
What's extraordinary to note is that while Livera's dynamic Burgundies have always dazzled us with their purity and complexity, this new regime has raised quality to an entirely new level. The 2006 vintage in this modest (and ice-cold) cellar has been transformed from a great vintage to remarkable one; and in tasting the following selections, you'd be hard-pressed not to agree.
The Livera family makes “old world” Burgundy—earthy, pure and incredibly complex—and we select the cream of the crop for our own “Cuvée Unique” bottlings. Yes, it is hard work too choosing among so much perfect wine, but you certainly reap the rewards.

This is a site that in the hands of the family Livera consistently outperforms most Gevrey village wines—if not premier cru bottlings. We selected eight barrels aged in mostly older wood (with just one new barrel in the bunch.) A brooding purple in the glass, the wine opens with tantalizing aromas of black raspberries, fresh ginger and the caramelized scent of baked pie crust. Spicy and deep, with miles of luscious, chewy dark fruit that shows balanced and juicy. Not only is this a spectacular value for villages Burgundy, but also shows far above its station, and should age effortlessly for five to 10 years. A favorite. $29.95 2006 Livera Fixin “En Olivier” Reserve Vieilles VignesThis is the cuvée that will make you fall in love with Fixin. We selected a combination of three barrels (with one new wood barrel). This is a Fixin wrapped in sable, a sultry, supple Burgundy that shows none of the rough edges of less-diligently crafted Fixin bottlings. In short, a show-stopper! “En Oliver” sits next to premier cru “Les Arvelets” at the forest line, nurtures 35-year-old vines and delivers rich and ripe Burgundy topped with an extra helping of finesse. White pepper and meaty roast duck aromas on the nose; lavender-infused chocolate blends with blackberries on the palate. $31.95 2006 Livera Gevrey-Chambertin “Clos Village” Reserve Vieilles VignesA noble vineyard in the heart of Gevrey, “Clos Village” sits just outside the estate, where both Phillip and Damien Livera can keep a watchful eye on their 60-year-old vines. We selected two barrels, a blend of one older and one new. “Clos Village” always reminds us of a baby Chambertin, with its deep purple hue and notes of boysenberries and licorice on the aromatic nose. Notes of chocolate blend with cinnamon and black pepper on the spicy mouth; complex, engaging and always seductive. $49.95 2006 Livera Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru Reserve Vieilles VignesFrom one acre of older vines in the lieu-dit “Les Gemeaux.” Incredibly limited; Livera crafts just a few cases of this exceptional grand cru each vintage—we chose one single, perfect and new barrel. Dark cherries mix with notes of candied licorice on the nose; layers of smoke and lush black fruits alternate on the precise and structured mouth. A special, rare grand cru at a more than reasonable price, too. Call 1-800-266-6585 for availability. |
