Domaine Michel Ecard

Savigny-lès-Beaune | Côte de Beaune | Burgundy

What strikes you when you first experience Burgundy from Michel Ecard is the undeniable sensation that this is the sort of Burgundian Pinot Noir for which you’ve been searching all along. This grower’s wines are upfront and honest, captivating and convincing—truly how handmade, small-batch Burgundy should be.

There are few other Burgundy villages that consistently offer such quality-for-value as does Savigny-lès-Beaune, and few winemakers in this village that deliver such quality each and every vintage as does Michel Ecard. His low-sulfur, balanced wines are not only deliciously complex but also age beautifully, a rare trait for Burgundy so reasonably priced.

Michel Ecard learned the trade by working with his father, Maurice Ecard, a highly respected artisan in Savigny who has since retired. Michel founded his own domaine in 2005, and it is very much a micro-operation, with Michel in both the cellar and vineyards taking care of his grapes, from field to bottle.

FARMING & WINEMAKING

Vines are cared for according to sustainable principles, avoiding pesticides and herbicides and using indigenous yeasts for fermentation. Grapes are harvested by hand, and pressed in an old-style, upright wooden press. Juice is fermented naturally and very little (to almost no) sulfur is added during fermentation or during bottling. Wines are aged in French oak barrels (up to 50% new oak, depending on the cru) and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

RED WINES
Savigny-lès-Beaune Vieilles Vignes Rouge

A blend of four different vineyards in Savigny, with vines planted in the early 1960s. Always an overachiever, with juicy, pure red fruit and peppery aromas.

Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Gravains'

This sandy, gravel-rich vineyard delivers a silkier, smoother Burgundian Pinot Noir with bright, red fruit flavors. Another great one for the cellar.

Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru ‘Narbantons’

This rocky vineyard inspires a more Bordeaux-like profile to winemaker Michel Ecard’s Pinot Noir fruit, delivering more structured tannins and cassis flavors.

Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Serpentières'

A complete, savory Burgundian Pinot Noir from vines planted in the 1930s; without question, ‘Les Serpentières’ is one of Savigny’s most complex wines. We’ve enjoyed bottles with more than 10 years of age and each has been a revelation.
