Château des Correaux
Leynes | Mâconnais | BurgundyChâteau des Correaux was established some 200 years ago in the verdant hills of Leynes, just west of the city of Mâcon in southern Burgundy. This corner of France represents a unique shift in vinous focus: to the north, the Mâconnais champions Burgundian Chardonnay, whites rich in sun and stone fruits; while to the south, the granite hills of Beaujolais begin, with a focus on the red grape Gamay.
The Bernard family has been able stewards of both grapes for nine generations, even if their vineyard holdings show a pronounced preference for Burgundian Chardonnay. Here farming is sustainable, with grass cover between vineyard rows, moderate plowing and organic treatments, if at all necessary.
Winemaker Jean Bernard and his family have long been stewards of another of Leynes’ claims to fame: a charming 18th century château, built in a style popularized by Louis XIV. For local tourists, it’s a perfect pairing: historic architecture and terroir-true wines.
FARMING & WINEMAKING
The Bernard family tends some 50 acres of vines in and around the villages of Leynes and Saint-Verand, west of Mâcon in southern Burgundy. A majority of vines are Chardonnay, with just over two acres of Pinot Noir and Gamay, where some of the estate’s oldest vines are tended in the appellation of Saint-Amour in Beaujolais.
Farming is sustainable, with cover crops planted between rows; the estate is certified under the “high environmental value” (Haute Valeur Environnementale, HVE) program in France. Grapes are fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks. Wines are aged on fine lees in tank.
Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay
