Egly-Ouriet is the “Very Top of the Pecking Order in Champagne”

Aug 17, 2016

Really stunning notes and scores from Antonio Galloni (Vinous Media) for the newest crop of Domaine Egly-Ouriet Champagne from Ambonnay. This quote says it all:

“A number of the most impressive 2015 vins clairs I tasted this past spring were in Francis Egly’s cellar, including a still Pinot Noir that is off the charts. Over the years, Egly’s Champagnes have gained in polish and finesse without sacrificing their trademark power. Egly was among the first producers to emerge in the grower Champagne movement. As such, he is perhaps sometimes overlooked in favor of some of his younger colleagues. Make no mistake about it, though, these wines are at the very top of the pecking order in Champagne today.”

North Berkeley Imports is proud to have been one of the first importers of Egly-Ouriet Champagne to the United States, championing early on the authenticity and desirability of grower Champagne. All Egly-Ouriet wines below are IN STOCK! Call our store in Berkeley to reserve yours. 800.266.6585.

The wines:

NV Premier Cru Brut ‘Les Vignes de Vrigny’ (Pinot Meunier)
“… very pretty and nicely balanced throughout. Yellow stone fruit, apricot, mint, panna cotta and lightly tropical notes all meld together effortlessly. This is an especially supple, open-knit vintage for the Vignes de Vrigny … This is one of the few base-2011 Champagnes that is worth an extra effort to find.”

NV Grand Cru Brut Tradition
“… weightless, airy and gracious, all of which make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Freshly cut flowers and orchard fruit are nicely delineated throughout. In this release, the Brut Tradition is a bit lighter than it usually is, but all the elements are well-balanced.”

NV Grand Cru Extra Brut V.P. (Vieillissement Prolongé)
“One of the many highlights in this range, the NV Extra Brut Grand Cru V.P. bristles with energy from start to finish. Lemon oil, chamomile, pear, hazelnut, acacia and wild flowers open up in the glass, but it is the wine’s interplay of power and freshness that is totally beguiling. There is so much to like.”

NV Grand Cru Brut Rosé
“Cranberry, chalk, white pepper and flowers give the NV Brut Rosé Grand Cru its delineated, finely sculpted personality. Classy and polished to the core, Egly’s Rosé captures the essence of the house style.”

NV Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Brut ‘Les Crayères’
“… one of the more refined, polished wines I have ever tasted from Francis Egly. Everything is simply in the right place. Mirabelle plum, hard candy, flowers, mint and chalk are all beautifully delineated in a super-classy, polished Champagne that showcases the Egly-Ouriet style at its very best. Lifted, gracious and precise, the Vieilles Vignes is simply magnificent.”

2006 Grand Cru Brut Millésime
“Another standout, the 2006 Brut Millesime is stellar. This is an especially broad, creamy Champagne built on textural richness. Lemon oil, white flowers, smoke, almonds and baked apple are some of the signatures. Rich and resonant on the palate, the 2006 will drink beautifully for another decade or so … Egly’s 2006 is a pure pleasure to taste today.”
