Le Clos du Caillou “A Candidate For Perfection”

May 5, 2022

We are eagerly awaiting the fruits of the 2020 vintage from Le Clos du Caillou — as a teaser, here’s a selection of stupendous notes for these wines from The Wine Advocate. Caillou remains at the top of its game and certainly at the top of the list in the southern Rhone — certified organic, seriously cellar-worthy southern red blends just don’t get any better.

From The Wine Advocate May 2022 – Joe Czerwinski, reviewer

2020 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘La Reserve’

“… a strong candidate for perfection … the nose delivers the essence of sandy-soil Grenache, with notes of rose petals, lavender, thyme, cherries and raspberries. Full-bodied and lush, silky and long, it adds hints of toasty oak and salted licorice on the finish.”

2020 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘Les Quartz’

“Scents of roses, herbal tea, cherries and raspberries leave the mouth watering, while the palate is full-bodied, lush and silky. It really looks special this year.”

2020 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘Les Safres’

“… offers up oodles of vibrant red raspberries and cherries. Medium to full-bodied, it’s silky in texture, with a long, mouthwatering finish.”

2020 Le Clos du Caillou Cotes du Rhone ‘Les Quartz’

“… offers up seductive floral-herbal notes of rose garden alongside raspberries and cherries. Medium to full-bodied, silky and voluminous on the palate, it finishes long and elegant. It’s another terrific wine that should prove relatively affordable upon release.”

2020 Le Clos du Caillou Cotes du Rhone ‘La Reserve’

“… easily the equal of many Châteauneufs. A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre, it offers up scents of rose petals, black tea, black cherries and red raspberries. Full-bodied, generous and rich, it finishes long and silky.”
