The finest sparkling wines from Sicily in my mind are produced by Murgo. Their vintage dated Extra Brut, crafted entirely from Nerello Mascalese, spends between 5 and 6 years on the lees, and is very dry, with good acidity. This has the complexity and yeastiness you find in the finest sparkling wines and there is also great freshness – the 2004 tasted recently is tasting out beautifully. This cuvée most assuredly can take its place in a discussion of Italy’s finest sparkling wines.
