NEW ARRIVALS! 2013 Domaine de la Pousse d’Or

Jul 25, 2016

You can’t miss the bright façade of Domine de la Pousse d’Or while driving down through the Côte de Beaune into Volnay. The vines of monopole vineyard ‘Clos d’Audignac’ act as the estate’s “green” carpet, welcoming visitors to taste history as told through the medium of Pinot Noir.

Like other hallowed estates such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Comte de Vogüé, Pousse d’Or is a cornerstone of Burgundian legend, with roots that reach as far back as the twelfth century.

Some of our more memorable tasting afternoons have been spent in the cool caves underneath the chateau — the worn brick floor between stacked barrels and vaulted arches overhead reminding us just how many generations have visited these rooms, thief and glass in hand.

Our latest visit not so long ago to taste the 2013 vintage — bottles that have just arrived in our temperature-controlled warehouse — cemented our long-standing belief that few estates can capture the seemingly immortal essence of Burgundian Pinot Noir as faithfully as does Pousse d’Or.

“In fact, with their outstanding inner-mouth tension and powerful minerality, the vintage’s winners can be quite exhilarating. Some of the best 2013s remind me of the brilliant 2010s in their energy and saline minerality,” says Stephen Tanzer of this vibrant, exceptional vintage.

Below you’ll find our selections for 2013 — for many of these wines, however, we can count the number of cases on one hand. Clear a cool corner of your cellar and call us today to reserve your own.

VILLAGES-LEVEL BURGUNDY

2013 Chambolle-Musigny
An exceptional village wine, one that captures the violet essence and silky-smooth character of the best of Chambolle. Delicious today but will age effortlessly for seven to 10 years.

PREMIER CRU BURGUNDY

2013 Santenay 1er Cru ‘Clos Tavannes’
‘Clos Tavannes’ is a walled vineyard on the border with Chassagne; its vines, planted in 1920, were originally sourced from Romanée-Conti. “Exotic perfume of cherry, redcurrant and tobacco. Spicy redcurrant and purple fruit flavors … sound acidity gives it good cut.” –Stephen Tanzer

2013 Pommard 1er Cru ‘Jarollières’
Pousse turns Pommard’s often heavier fruit into gossamer silk. Ancient vines planted in 1925 are the secret. “…aromas of black raspberry, mocha and coffee … a relatively delicate style, with firm mineral-driven acidity.” –Stephen Tanzer

2013 Volnay 1er Cru ‘Clos d’Audignac’ Monopole
This “monopole” or exclusive vineyard spills directly from the chateau’s front door. Steeply sloped and facing northwest, it produces cool, poised Pinot Noir. “Darker aromas of black cherry, blueberry, mint and menthol … nicely integrated acidity giving shape to the dark fruit flavors.” –Stephen Tanzer

2013 Volnay 1er Cru ‘Clos de la Bousse d’Or’ Monopole
An ancient walled plot next to the Volnay town hall, with 60+ year old vines and reams of Burgundian history to share. “Sweet and densely packed, with red fruit and game lifted by floral and pepper notes. Slightly dusty tannins are nicely supported by fruits and flowers…” –Stephen Tanzer

2013 Volnay 1er Cru ‘Clos de 60 Ouvrees’ Monopole
A special walled plot inside the famous ‘Caillerets,’ Volnay’s most prized vineyard. “Boasts a lovely combination of opulence and energy in the mouth … I would have picked this blind as a Côte de Nuits. Finishes with noteworthy length and floral lift. An excellent showing today.” –Stephen Tanzer

2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Feusselottes’
‘Feusselottes’ is effortlessly elegant, with seductive aromas and a smooth middle. “Cherry, raspberry, mocha and coffee … There’s a silkiness to this premier cru.” –Stephen Tanzer

2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Groseilles’
This vineyard’s stony character results in Pinot Noir with tangy fruit and peppery energy. Its oldest vines were planted in 1937. “High-toned, musky perfume of redcurrant and pepper. Juicy, savory and soil-driven, with spicy acidity … A distinctly savory, dry style of Chambolle…” –Stephen Tanzer

2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Charmes’
‘Charmes’ is the quintessential Chambolle: purpled aromas, velvety middle, smooth and long. “Sappy, charming Chambolle with harmonious acidity and well-judged extraction. The persistent finish shows good floral lift…” –Stephen Tanzer

2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Les Amoureuses’
The star of Chambolle’s premier crus. Pousse’s vines here border grand cru Musigny. “Deep nose offers scents of blackberry, violet, licorice, minerals and smoke. Sweet and silky on entry … Really saturates the mouth…” –Stephen Tanzer

GRAND CRU BURGUNDY

2013 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru
“Captivating, perfumed nose offers wild scents of red berries, flowers, minerals and leather. Sappy and sweet on the palate, with lively acidity framing the spicy dark cherry and raspberry flavors. Finishes with powerful but nicely integrated, fine-grained tannins … This is already quite expressive but will be even better with a few years of aging and should evolve slowly.” –Stephen Tanzer

2013 Corton-Clos du Roi Grand Cru
“Wild black raspberry, boysenberry and cinders on the nose; very ripe … Fat, sweet and round on entry, then densely packed in the mid-palate, with purple fruit and dark plum flavors accented by a note of black pepper.” –Stephen Tanzer

2013 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
“Very ripe, wild aromas of red fruits, brown spices and leather. Wonderfully thick, sweet and silky, displaying a seamless texture and a light touch to the flavors of raspberry and mocha. Perfectly integrated acidity carries the sappy raspberry and brown spice flavors through a long, sweetly tannic finish.” –Stephen Tanzer

2013 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
“Aromas of raspberry, minerals and dried flowers … Round on entry, then sappy in the middle, showing terrific crushed raspberry intensity along with saline, mocha, spice and earth notes. Really saturates the palate on the back end, finishing with outstanding smoky persistence.” –Stephen Tanzer
