Rosato Is How You Say “Summer” In Italian

May 26, 2022

Not that great Italian rosato necessarily needs heady point scores or table-pounding reviews as the temperature climbs and summer starts in earnest — we always crave great rosato!

Our partners in Italy — Rocca di Montegrossi (Tuscany) and Murgo (Sicily) — consistently slay it when it comes to great rosato, with depth and spice and endless thirst-quenching energy.

The experts at Vinous heartily agree — here’s a quick peek at 2021 Rosato, wines that are either already here or on their way shortly!

2021 Rocca di Montegrossi Toscana Rosato

“The 2021 Rosato is irresistible and decidedly savory in the glass, with wild herbal tones and wet stones giving wat to crushed apricots and lime zest. This envelopes the palate in soft textural fruits, while mixing saline minerals with brilliant acidity, as gingery spices mount toward the close. It tapers off more salty than sweet, yet nicely refreshing, while leaving wild strawberry tones to linger. The word ‘yum’ does not do this justice.” — Eric Guido, Vinous

2021 Murgo Etna Rosato

“The 2021 Etna Rosato, a varietal Nerello Mascalese, wafts up with sweet apple and melon complemented by hints of smoke. This steps lightly on the palate, impressing more with its purity and savory nature than texture alone. It leaves a subtle staining of minerality while finishing with cheek-puckering freshness. This zesto Rosato will pair wonderfully with just about anything coming off the grill.” — Eric Guido, Vinous
