Wine & Spirits: Diego Conterno in Piedmont A “Best Buy”

Feb 1, 2021

Great reviews in the new edition of Wine & Spirits (Feb 2021) for our newest partner in Piedmont, Diego Conterno! This is part of the magazine’s focus on recent releases in Piedmont Barbera & Dolcetto.

Do note the “Best Buy” designation for Diego’s 2019 Dolcetto d’Alba — a gorgeous wine that reflects both the characteristic dark berry fruit of Dolcetto and the profound character of Monforte — and is a serious value for the quality.

Diego Conterno 2019 Dolcetto d’Alba – Best Buy
This wine smells of violets and tastes of purple fruits—crunchy plum and blackberry—the flavors laced with notes of bitter chocolate and cinched by plum-skin tannins. Its bright, ample fruit tones and raspy tannins would match pork and fennel sausage.

Diego Conterno 2019 Barbera d’Alba ‘Ferrione’
Diego and Stefano Conterno make this barbera with fruit from a single, high-elevation plot of vines, some a half-century old. They age the wine in large oak casks and cement tanks, emphasizing the vivid raspberry and blackberry flavors. Brisk acidity surges through the fruit tones, trailing light spice notes as the wine moves toward a fresh, herb-inflected finish.
